Gods of the Earth - Chapters 3 & 4

(Sigh...website down again....sorry)

Chapter 3

Kola stared at the ‘human rabbit’ for a long time and then slowly retreated out of the room.

“This is indeed a huge breakthrough, what if I were to develop brain implants that could evolve speech organs in the gestation period of the yet to be born baby, or even in its pregnant mother. The possibilities are endless Muyiwa!” said Kola, extremely delighted at his friend’s achievement.

Muyiwa beamed with pleasure, basking in his friend’s praise as he ushered him back upstairs to his private living room.

“I too have something important to show you as I said earlier on the phone,” said Kola, accepting the glass of wine Muyiwa offered him.

“You told your wife that a colleague of mine performed the brain implant operation on you. That story was good for then, but now you need to tell her the truth; that it was the Translucent Man who placed the microchip in your brain.”

“Why do I need to reveal such sensitive information to her?” asked Muyiwa.
“To prepare her mind for the Visitation; the Translucent Man will appear to her soon,” responded Kola.

“He told you this?” asked Muyiwa, leaning forward.

“Yes. He will appear to both our wives soon. I have performed the ceremony he requested for, giving him full rights to my wife’s body.”

“Yes, he eventually gave me that option too, but he didn’t make the same kind of deal with me as he did with you. He didn’t promise me knowledge or anything…why is that?” asked Muyiwa.

“He is waiting for you to decide on the option you want. You kill your wife or you allow him to take her over.”

“Obviously I can’t kill my wife Kola!” exclaimed Muyiwa.

“Then when next he comes to you, simply accept the alternative deal. The problem with you is that you are still fearful of him. You should make bold requests from him or you will not get anything at all. What kind of knowledge or things do you want from him for instance?”

“Same as you I guess, in my own field. Knowledge that will restore speech functionality to animals, think of how much human kind will benefit if they can harness the knowledge animals have of plants, hidden treasures, perhaps even other beings that cats can see and we can’t!” Muyiwa’s eyes shone as he gripped his friend’s hands.

“I feel you my friend but the sacrifice will be terrible,” said Kola.

“How do you mean?”

“I will never be able to make love to my wife Wunmi again, knowing it is the Translucent Man that her body houses.” Kola sighed and leaned back into the deep cushions.

“Yes, a great sacrifice indeed, but will he need to female bodies, and how will he live in both at the same time?” Muyiwa poured more wine into their glasses.

“I don’t know, but I keep wondering what he wants to achieve in my wife’s body,” mused Kola.

“Well as one who is a scientist, I can only speculate. Perhaps he wants to make certain changes in her body or their bodies as the case may be and evolve them to his own liking.”

Kola bolted upright. “I believe you are right Muyiwa! What other reason can he possibly have? Someone who can phase in and out of walls, and perform surgical operations merely by phasing his fingers into one’s body can only want one thing – the right to tamper with a human body that he can call his own.”

“What if he evolves something monstrous or something we can’t handle and then he begins to renege on his promises? What if he eventually enslaves us somehow with his superior knowledge?” asked Muyiwa.

“I’ve thought a great deal about that too, but as it is we really don’t have any choice now. He holds the aces.”

“So what is this important thing you wanted to show me?” asked Muyiwa curiously.

Kola stood up and raised his arms dramatically. Suddenly he whizzed out of the front door and reappeared shortly beside Muyiwa with a huge smile on his face.

“What! How is that even possible?” Muyiwa was on his feet in disbelief.

“That was the effect of a second brain implant. Now get this; I didn’t design it myself, the Translucent Man did, but made a duplicate copy for me leaving me with the blue prints for designing others by myself. No surgical operation needed, he merely phased his hands into my head while I was asleep.”

“This is incredible!” said Muyiwa, still in awe of what he had just witnessed.

“Something happened though and it still puzzles me. My wife came in and saw the Translucent Man as he phased his fingers into my head. She ought not to have seen him at all but somehow she did. I also noticed that the Translucent Man was a little confused. I’d say he wasn’t expecting her to see him at all.”

“Hmm, it gets more intriguing,” replied Muyiwa looking puzzled.

“But she did say something to me though, she said ‘maybe the Holy Spirit wanted her to see him’,” Kola stood up and smoothed his Buba down. It was time to go. His wife would soon be on her way back home.

Muyiwa stood up and they shook hands as they walked towards the front door.
“Do you think he will come to you or me first?” asked Muyiwa.

“Most likely me, he seemed pretty eager to see my wife now that I have performed the Take Over Ceremony as he called it.”

“May I ask what form the ceremony took?” Muyiwa looked at Kola with interest but also with concern.

“Well, he asked me for my wife’s name and after I told him, he said I would stand proxy for her. He began to speak in some strange language and wave his arms around in some mystical way. Thereafter he made me lie on our marriage bed and he lay on top of me. That part was really weird because suddenly I began to feel like I was a woman. I mean I really began to feel the strangest kinds of desires that Man should never feel, then he stood up and said it is done.”

“Hmm…do you still feel those strange desires now?” asked Muyiwa.

“No, they stopped as soon as he stood up from me,” Kola shoved his hands deep into his pockets.

“I think what you have experienced might be some mystical or alchemical transmutation of her essences into you as proxy, and his lying down on top of you symbolizes his taking over of your wife using you as proxy. I know it sounds complicated but that is what I can make out of that mumbo jumbo.”

“I think I should just go Muyiwa, I’m getting freaked out,” said Kola, striding out of the door.
“Let me know if anything else comes up,” said Muyiwa as the door closed behind his friend.

Chapter 4

“And he said you were next in line for a brain implant? God forbid!” said Mary to her closest friend and cousin Wunmi, stroking her hair to calm her down.

“I should be the one strengthening you,” Wunmi smiled through her tears; “That was what the Holy Spirit said to me.”

“”He spoke to you, what did he say?” asked Mary hopefully, rising to her feet.

“He said we should prepare ourselves and I should strengthen you. We are not to expect any angelic assistance this time and little or none from Him directly. He said he has given me gifts, and that we should get ready to do battle against the gods of the earth,” said Wunmi holding her cousin’s hands.

“The gods of the earth,” echoed Mary thoughtfully; “As I was praying for our husbands late last night on my bed, I sensed an evil presence hovering over my husband. He was asleep so I merely whispered the name of Jesus over and over again till I couldn’t sense it anymore.”

“I felt that evil presence once before too, even before I saw this transparent or translucent man as he likes to call the being,” said Wunmi as they strolled towards the car park. The Service was over and people were still milling around. Pastor Adewusi hadn’t yet returned.

“That phrase just wouldn’t leave my mind but now I remember where I have heard it before,” said Mary stopping abruptly.

“What phrase are you talking about?” asked Wunmi as she opened the door of Mary’s car.

“While I was saying the name of Jesus repeatedly, a thought forced its way into my mind. I thought it was my imagination but you have just confirmed that it was not. I heard it in my mind – the gods of the earth are coming,” said Mary with a little tremor in her voice.

“Mary we have to get our act together before it’s too late. We need to start building ourselves up on our most holy faith again,” said Wunmi, feeling the dread coming upon Mary.

“It will have to be immediately after school,” said Mary firmly.

“Yes, but in the meantime the Holy Spirit might want to give us instructions or guidance so we need to get into the Word deeply, like we used to six years ago,” agreed Wunmi.

“It’s been so long, and we were so close to the Spirit then,” said Mary, beginning to feel troubled.

“I’m as guilty as you are dear,” said Wunmi, as Mary entered the car and she closed the door.

They waved and Wunmi walked towards her car and got in. She wanted to start driving but her hand froze on the ignition…

“You are mine now,” whispered a voice next to her ear. Wunmi screamed and looked all around her…there was no one…quickly she scrambled out of the car and ran back to the church…she knew who it was…the Translucent Man!

She couldn’t possibly tell Pastor James, he wouldn’t understand. He was relatively new. She stood in the entrance where there were still people gathered…there was safety in numbers. She took out her phone and started dialling Mary’s number.

She can’t help you…you do something about this now!

“What am I to do Lord?” she whispered to herself almost in tears.

Same thing you did six years ago…resist the devil and he shall flee from you!

Wunmi entered the church…it was almost empty, except for the Ushers who were having a meeting and the Choir who were rehearsing. Swiftly she found an isolated corner of the building and began to pray in tongues.

She needed to stir up her spirit…courage would come from her spirit, not her soul…she had been given gifts by the Spirit…they needed to be stirred up too…this was the way.

She hadn’t prayed for more than five minutes when she found herself beginning to sing…it was a song she hadn’t sang for years…it was the song she had sang after Aunty Hope had been buried…a song she had used to strengthen and console herself…it was the hymn – Guide me oh thou Great Jehovah…she didn’t know why she sang it…or how it had come unbidden to her lips…but she sang it and listened to the lyrics with her heart…

Guide me oh thou great Jehovah
Pilgrim through this barren land
I am weak, but thou art mighty
Hold me with thy powerful hand

She stopped when she reached the chorus of the second verse…for she had found the strength she needed in those words…

Strong Deliverer, Strong Deliverer,
Be thou still my strength and shield…

It was done…she finished the song a little too loudly, for heads turned in her direction but she didn’t care…strength had come to her spirit…she was bold as a lion as she strode back to her car.

“I dare you!” she said out loud as she fired up the engine and drove out of the church…she had needed deliverance…whatever agreement or covenant that her husband had made with the Translucent Man on her behalf was no longer binding…deliverance had come!

She prayed in tongues all the way home…no longer would she be intimidated by Kola and his Translucent Man…yet somehow she knew that the worst was yet to come…they might get violent with her…or what if they inflicted pain on her…emotional, mental or even spiritual?

With a firm voice she cast down imaginations, doing the same with her mind by rejecting all such thoughts and replacing them with the promises of God.

Isaiah 59: 19 When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him!

Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

2Sam 22:35  He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

The scriptures flooded her mind unbidden…she knew them all…but she didn’t know where to find them…and yet…here they were coming into her mind.

“Thank you Holy Spirit!” said Wunmi gratefully bowing her head in worship…she was back in business! The Holy Spirit had brought her back up to speed.

She stepped out of the car and entered the house…thank God her children were away at a birthday party for Femi’s friend. She didn’t know what she would have done if they had entered the car with her initially when the Translucent Man spoke to her…she wondered why he had rendered himself invisible.

“Why didn’t you show yourself?” she whispered to herself savagely as she went upstairs to the bedroom. She opened the door and stepped in…the curtains were drawn and the room was dark. She switched on the light…Kola was lying on the floor in the centre of the room!

Life! Taken for granted Part 2

Life isn't meant to be measured in units of time, for it would mean that Life and its activity (living); is centred on the passage of time...of years, months, weeks and days.

Existence should never be confused with Life...for whereas the former has to do with the passing of time;  the latter has to do with the birth and growth of the spirit within.

Biological life with its attendant needs, wants, relationships, etc, is perhaps what we generally refer to loosely as life and living , but there is a genuine life form residing  within the outer physical Man...it is dead in sin until it is reborn by the Spirit of God. But even in death it is the sole reason why the outer Man is physically alive.

But we only EXIST until this DEAD inward Man is reborn. Its purpose is to develop the character and nature of God so that it becomes the character and nature of the outward Man.

Its goal is to prepare the Man  through this inward transformation to be qualified and made fit to enter ETERNITY - the Kingdom of God; for without this transformation no man can enter the Kingdom of God.

Living Life therefore should primarily be with this mindset...not to live for one's SELF (ie one's biological, emotional or other needs PRIMARILY ); but to live for the Kingdom...by living the life OF the Kingdom here and now.

For Man shall not live by bread (food and the labour for it)  alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

We are to LIVE this outward life by EVERY word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

This speaks of the ability to hear what God is SAYING PERSONALLY to you. How can you hear if you aren't CLOSE or INTIMATE enough?

For if you spend say three hours a week in church and one hour a week with HIM PERSONALLY...How can you say that you know HIM let alone HEAR HIM?

Therefore your PERSONAL fellowship with HIM should be prioritized over and above all else.

The PERSONAL STUDY of HIS word (not a cursory reading), will begin to open both your eyes and ears to what HE is saying PERSONALLY to you, if done habitually and regularly.

It is the Spirit's way of bringing HIS thoughts back to your remembrance whenever you need guidance.

But if you have no words from HIM stored in your spirit through constant study... How can HE speak to you in your hour of need?

Take this from one whose life was recently spared...

LIFE! Taken for granted...

It usually takes a crisis to get you to the point where things you once took for granted now become the most sought after things in your life.

For instance a man who  rises from what could have been his death bed can never again view life the way he used to.

Crisis always precipitates in a rebirth of sorts...a change in perspectives...in philosophy...in mindset,  but most importantly a departure from the previous way of life.

There is an after life, else why are people so instinctively terrified of dying?

They are afraid that something beyond this life is out there...nay we all know it instinctively, for it was planted within by our Maker.

They are afraid because they are not sure of what will happen to them on the Other Side.

They are afraid because somehow they KNOW they have not lived THIS life in a way that would prepare them for the REAL Life.

Thus we discover that this life is indeed to prepare us for a better life... Or a worse one, should we fail to make the necessary changes.

We shouldn't wait for such a crisis to come...for we may never come out of it... If you are afraid of what will happen to you after this life, then in all likelihood you aren't ready for it...the Better and Greater Life...

Perhaps I write this article to get someone to that crisis point without having to experience the crisis itself.

Please take it as a warning from one whose life has just been spared.

Death is final... But to all of us... It is but a BREATH away....

THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM - PART 2

The phrase – “THE Gospel of the Kingdom” is mentioned thrice in the Scriptures (maybe more, but I haven’t found them). Without exception, Christ was the one person preaching this gospel.

Matt 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Matt 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God…

So if we are to really understand what this gospel of the Kingdom is all about, we should hear from the lips of the Master himself.

He started preaching this gospel at the beginning of his ministry on earth, right after he returned in the power of the Spirit from the wilderness…

Luke 4: And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

His intentions were clear enough, his mission was very specific…he was to preach the gospel to the poor…that was the first thing…everything he itemized in that short mission statement was clearly part of the gospel of the Kingdom which he began preaching hereafter.

The two areas of his mission statement that required active preaching were:

To preach the gospel to the poor and to preach deliverance to the captives.

Each of these two areas were enforced by his ministry of healing and deliverance; for example he says in…

Matt 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

This was his ministry of deliverance in action…concerning this, he stated that if it was by the power of the Spirit of God that he cast out devils, then the KINGDOM OF GOD has come upon them.

This tells us that the Kingdom of God is not a place we are looking forward to, it is the rule of God already in existence upon his earthly subjects…a rule that however must be ENFORCED like Christ did on earth…not by mere empty words or promises. Here are a few examples of scriptures talking about the Kingdom of God…

1Cor 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

These scriptures place boundaries around what the Kingdom of God is and what it is not, and immediately we see that there can be no division between the gospel of the Kingdom and the Kingdom of God itself…for the one preaches what the other is about.

To be in the Kingdom and live the LIFE of the Kingdom, one must be deeply engaged in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost…that is; one must be actively pursuing the development of the fruit of the Spirit above all else…one must also be prepared to back up the preaching of the gospel of the Kingdom with power, NOT NECESSARILY against devils as Paul clearly states in these verses written to the Church at Corinth…

Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.

But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, BUT THE POWER.

For the kingdom of God is not in word, BUT IN POWER.

What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?

Paul was clearly speaking to the Church when he penned these words...he wasn't talking about casting out demons, he was talking about enforcing the rule of God...enforcing the values of the Kingdom and disciplining those who called themselves believers...subjects of the Kingdom, who were erring from the faith.

One of the most common pitfalls in Christianity and the Church today is the issue of wealth…fame…ambition…worldly power…recognition…achievements…and so forth.

No believer will deny that all the above mentioned are part and parcel of the world system…they have no place in the Kingdom of God…for the Kingdom of God is emphatic about the requirements for believers who would come under its rule as the following scriptures will bear witness…

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

Then Jesus beholding him LOVED HIM, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and COME, TAKE UP THE CROSS AND FOLLOW ME.

And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for HE HAD GREAT POSSESSIONS.

And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How HARDLY SHALL THEY THAT HAVE RICHES ENTER into the kingdom of God!

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, HOW HARD is it for them that TRUST IN RICHES to enter into the kingdom of God!

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

One of the ways in which the devil pulls the wool over believers’ eyes is in giving them a sense of false security…they believe that the phrase TRUST IN RICHES means that they put all their hopes in it, and that without their riches they may not ‘make it in life’…or even survive life itself…

But this was not what Christ meant when he spoke these words shortly after the rich young ruler departed sorrowfully from him.

Was it that the rich young ruler put all his TRUST in his riches? The Scriptures merely say that he had GREAT POSSESSIONS…how did Jesus arrive at the word TRUST in describing the rich young ruler’s ‘walking away from the Kingdom’ because he had great possessions?

The answer is because WE TEND TO ACCUMULATE AND SPEND TIME (our lives) ON WHAT WE BELIEVE OR TRUST IN!

The rich young ruler BELIEVED in wealth more than he believed in the Kingdom. Belief is a very subtle thing…I can claim to be a believer because I am born again…but the proof of my New Birth lies in the fruit I am bearing which will show up for people to see.

Christ said by their fruit ye shall KNOW them!

The rich young ruler’s fruit was obviously material…YOU CANNOT BEAR MATERIAL FRUIT OR PRODUCTIVITY AND AT THE SAME TIME BEAR SPIRITUAL FRUIT…this was the reason why Christ exclaimed TWICE in the above verses – HOW HARDLY SHALL THEY THAT HAVE RICHES ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD (verse 23);

Children, HOW HARD is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! (Verse 24).

This is the same sense in which Christ taught...you cannot serve God and Mammon for you will love the one and despise the other. The rich young ruler by his action of turning away, DESPISED the Kingdom and God...EVEN THOUGH HE LEFT SORROWFULLY!

In the first of the two verses, Christ exclaims about how HARD it will be for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God…yet he was talking to his FOLLOWERS (among whom were probably a few well to do) and the bible says his disciples were astonished at his words!

Because of their astonishment, Christ exclaimed AGAIN to re-emphasize his words, BECAUSE OF THEIR ASTONISHMENT…they couldn’t believe their ears…then how could anyone possibly be saved, they asked!

Christ’s answer was typical…With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

This is the point where I am going…Christ separates riches into a class of its own…he does not mention how difficult it is for people or even believers generally to enter the Kingdom ORDINARILY...until he mentions MONEY…MAMMON…that appears to be a sore spot in the Kingdom…so sore that ONLY GOD alone can make it POSSIBLE for a rich man to enter the Kingdom…

The instruction that Christ gave the rich young ruler is the same is one he gave EVERYONE ELSE…if we will FOLLOW HIM…we HAVE TO deny OURSELVES…take up the cross…and only then will we be qualified to follow him. This is the Kingdom procedure of admittance.

MT 16:24  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

The rich young ruler was unable to deny himself his riches…it is VERY DIFFICULT for those who have accumulated wealth to DENY themselves of it…in other words what Christ was simply saying was that if indeed you want entry into the Kingdom…(believers and unbelievers alike); lay aside that which touches on your SELF…then take up the cross…wealth touches on the Self…

It is not easy to just go and sell off one’s GREAT possessions…it is the stuff that fantasy is made of…this is what makes it difficult…if Christ were to stand before wealthy men today…very FEW would be able to divest themselves of their wealth in order to follow him…the others will TRULY DESIRE to enter the Kingdom, but like the rich young ruler…they will walk away SORROWFULLY…suddenly it will dawn on them just then…just how much their wealth means to them….

PART 3 TO FOLLOW…

SELF - GOD OF THE FLESH - Part 2

In these immortal words of Christ lie a central truth about the Believer. He CANNOT follow Christ UNTIL he has denied his SELF. That is to say; he has rejected ALL that his SELF wants, desires and loves, and even then it is just the first step, for he must also  TAKE UP HIS CROSS and ONLY then will he be able and qualified to follow Christ.

A follower of Christ according to Christ's definition therefore, is one who has satisfied the three steps outlined by Christ himself in the above scripture. This is so because Christ's words start with the conditional word IF.

In other words, IF this is what you want, THEN you have to do THIS FIRST! It is important to note that Christ was talking to HIS DISCIPLES (His followers).

Even though they were not born again then, even though they were simply following him 'in the flesh' then; Christ knew there was coming a time when the Spirit would be given and there would be a New Birth...it was to that time that Christ was referring.

It was not just for Sin alone that Christ came to die, he came to crucify the Old Man better known as Self; for without the crucifixion of the Old Man, Sin itself could not be dealt with and reduced to zero level.

RO 6:6  Knowing this, that our OLD MAN is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

This is the reason why Christ says no one can follow him EXCEPT follow those three steps...it is because DENIAL OF SELF will lead to the reality of the experience of the CRUCIFIXION OF SELF by taking up our cross.

The question in step 3 now is: Where are we following him to? Why, to the place of Crucifixion of course! OUTSIDE THE CITY!

Heb 13:13-14
Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

So by interpretation of scripture itself, we see that without (or outside) the camp has to do with being outside the city by virtue of the contrasting nature of the next part of the verse NO CONTINUING CITY...that was where Christ was crucified...outside the city.

The reason we should go out of the camp is simple...because HERE WE HAVE NO CONTINUING or enduring or lasting city.

In following Christ, we are not following him to a physical destination obviously...we are following him INTO a spiritual state...referred to elsewhere as IN CHRIST JESUS.

This process of the crucifixion of Self has already been accomplished for us by Christ himself on the cross, however it has to be worked out in our daily lives in various ways...

You see, being IN CHRIST JESUS refers to the group of people described in the scripture just quoted (Gal 5:24).

Again Paul describes it in another way elsewhere...

RO 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are IN CHRIST JESUS, who walk NOT after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

There are many who are IN CHRIST JESUS who obviously walk AFTER THE FLESH and not AFTER THE SPIRIT.

Just as there are many who are called and few who are chosen...both ARE AMONG THE CALLED...just as we have the foolish virgins and the wise virgins...ALL ARE VIRGINS...just as we have the tares growing among the wheat...THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE!

This process of denying Self, Paul describes in great detail...

The mortification of the deeds of the flesh is the practice in our daily lives of DENYING SELF AND TAKING UP OUR CROSS.

These scriptures outline God's Word on how to become part of the privileged FEW who  already belong to Christ...who are in truth IN CHRIST JESUS!

SELF... god of the Flesh

The Natural Man lives a natural life, obeying the desires of its mind and body. Since he has a will of his own, he simply does whatever he FEELS like, or whatever he WANTS to... within the context of the laws governing society.

In other words the Natural Man follows or obeys the natural inclinations of his heart.

The centre that controls all his inclinations is referred to as the heart.

Of this heart, Christ had a lot to say. He taught that the mouth is a channel through which the abundance or overflow of the heart is released.

Matt 15:18-19

But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

I once used to think that for this scripture to make any sense, it must mean that the mouth has to speak out murders, adulteries, fornications...I could identify with speaking out evil thoughts, but the other things on the list seemed to be a little farfetched...why would I go around speaking adulteries, fornications and murders?

So I began to do some research on what it means for "those things that proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart".

Pro 16:23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.

This was a scripture written in an era when the Natural Man held full sway over the lives of men...as yet the only alternative to the natural or outward man (ie the Inward Man - born again spirit); had not yet been provided.

In the above scripture, this same natural heart may be a wise one as the scripture indicates...if so, it teaches the mouth and adds learning to the lips.

This probably refers to the heart teaching the mouth what to say and what not to say...in other words there is an exercise in self restraint that the heart teaches the mouth.

In addition to this, the scripture says that the heart adds learning to the lips...meaning that it is from the heart that the mouth gains knowledge.

Thus when we compare both scriptures, we may infer that the adulteries, fornications, murders, etc that proceed out of the mouth are taught by the heart...proving that the heart is indeed a spring from which flows all manner of iniquity...

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

The heart can be described as a bottomless well that keeps spawning an inexhaustible supply of resources such as lusts, adulteries, murders and so forth.

That was when I discovered that the mouth does not merely speak words...it speaks UNSEEN THINGS!

Ps 8:2 Out of the MOUTH of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained STRENGTH because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

In the above scripture, we find STRENGTH coming out of the mouth of babes...in an earlier scripture we saw that the THINGS...(not words); that proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart.

Some of those things were listed as adulteries and murders...they are not mere words or even fantasies uttered by the mouth...they are THINGS... unseen spiritual thing or forces that have been dredged out of the heart and released into the life of that person...

Pro 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

How do the issues of life come out of the heart? Through the mouth...so we now know from Christ's teaching about the contents of the heart that in a Natural Man it consists of adulteries, fornications, murders, etc...these are the matters of the heart...they are released through the mouth through the instrumentality of words...words that carry UNSEEN THINGS...
